Following up on Julie Lawrence's 1st suggestion--
1) Switch to CFL bulbs AND understand how to properly dispose them

I'd add:
Write and call your government representatives/officials at all
levels to urge them to make all these green habits easy, cheap, and
safe.

In response to the State of NJ's praiseworthy push to encourage the
use of compact fluorescent lightbulbs, I've just been conducting a
little writing campaign of my own about CFL disposal. We've got a
decade's worth of dead CFLs in our garage and no legal, convenient
way to get rid of them locally.
