I think an interesting aspect of this new "museum" will be whether they can
maintain the same interest a year from now. I predict they won't be able to
do so and when comparing their "success" with that of a science/natural
history museum the latter will win out in the long term. One benefit of
science/natural history museums is they continue to evolve, in more ways
then one.
I do think, however, that we could learn a lot from their marketing
techniques.
I think a powerful and effective reaction that science/natural history
museums could take, and one that would garner a lot of publicity, is to
begin offering exhibits on pseudoscience. Exhibits that are hard-hitting and
don't cave to public sentiment and sensitivity. There may be protests and
public outcries but this would just increase publicity and visitor
attendence. Opponents would still come to see the exhibits just like a lot
of the opponents of creationism are going to see Ken Ham's monstrosity. I
don't see how this would go against the mission of museums - we'd still be
serving science and improving the public's understanding of our world.
