Even cooler....(or hotter?)...is to do this trick with a wooden match
instead of a toothpick. You put the flammable head of the match inside the
glass, then when everything's on and balanced, you light the head of the
match (with another match)! As long as the object is pretty still the match
will extinguish when the flame reaches the rim of the glass, and the item
will remain balanced! If the thing is rocking around a bit, then the flame
can go past the glass rim enough to cause the object to fall down.
Very cool - but doesn't increase the understanding of center of gravity.

There's always the parlor trick of balancing a spoon on the end of a

Two ideas:
1. Have kids build a mobile, which has to be balanced to hang straight. I
think Jay Newlin at the Science Museum of Minnesota designed a nice mobile
creation kit as part of his Workbench project. Not sure if the point was
to
illustrate the center of gravity etc.
2. When I was young, I had a balance; you could hang numbers on either
side. The numbers weighed in proportion to their value (i.e., 2 weighed
twice as
much as 1). So to make the balance even, the numbers on each side had to
add up to the same amount. Maybe you can still find the toy, but if the
concept sounds good, it would not be difficult to design something like
this.

I need help in teaching center of gravity / balance concepts to
elementary students. I'm looking for ways to demonstrate finding the
CoG as well as ways that students can display the concept. Any activity
ideas or background information would be greatly appreciated.
