Hi, I am a board member of group that is seeking to create a discovery
museum for our area. We have secured use of a building but we need to
make to add facilities (cafe, restrooms, gift shop, workshop, storage,
administrative offices) and additional exhibit space. We estimated that
it will cost about $1.5 million to do this and we are at the planning
stage of the capital campaign. Until now we have only had a half time
paid staff person. We are in the process of hiring a project manager. Our
chosen candidate has excelleant credentials and has worked in various
capacities for non-profits, including in capital campaigns. However, this
is her first experience with a museum and as a project manager. We do
have minimally adequate funds for a director and half-time assistant, as
well as basic office space and equipment for about one-year. We want to
negotiate a contract with her that will provide a basic salary but which
will also provide incentives for her success as a manager of the capital
campaign, as well as organization management. Our thought is to start her
at basic salary and then provide incentives on top of the salary. What
would be reasonable incentives? Should they be based on progress in
organizing and managing the campaign, on success in bring in funds, or
both? Are there any accepted standards? Is there anything we should not
do?
