Until a few years ago our annual regional schools science fair was held in
the city convention centre. One year the convention centre was not
available, so the science fair moved to our building - this was such a
popular and successful move that it has remained here. It does mean that we
schedule the change-over between one or more temporary exhibitions to leave
gallery space for the Fair for four days, but that is a small price to pay
for our involvement. The Science Fair is organised by an independent
committee of local teachers and university staff, with just one member of
our staff involved (myself). We provide the venue free of charge (although
the organisers normally end up making a sizeable donation), and all other
expenses are covered by the organising committee through sponsorship.

The weekend of the science fair is always very busy, with over 300
exhibitors, plus 80 judges, plus teachers and visiting families. We keep the
top exhibits on display for an extra week, so that students can come in and
be inspired. As far as I am concerned, our hosting the science fair is an
important way for us to be involved in our education community. We get many
comments from participants and visitors in appreciation of Te Manawa's role
in the science fair.

We are interested in knowing if museums or science centers have hosted
science fairs for local schools and if so were they successful?

Thanks,
