Max,

Over the years we have put these sort of programs into our exhibitions.
There is a lot of source code "out there" for creating and viewing
fractals.
One of the fastest, deepest and flexible is probably FRACTINT. This is
freeware, and the source code is available ( for C in windows and
lunix).. Not certain of the liciencing details but its probably open
source.
It can be found at http://www.fractint.org/

The challenge in presenting these sorts of images is in simplifying the
number and range of varibles so the public don't get "lost" in the user
interface, or in uninteresting areas of the fractal.

IBM also were disctributing a fractal discovery lab software program
years ago (not certain of its status)

At times we have used fractint to generate animations (videos) of
zooming into various areas of interest , then allowed the public select
and play clips from various areas of fractal. By giving them the control
over the playback they can zoom in and out, through many orders of
magnitude in real time, which even the fastest realtime programs can't
achieve.

Hope this helps, contact me off if you need any specific details.

barmain says
"sorry... We don't cater for functions here"

We are in the process of designing some Math exhibits and one exhibit
that we are interested in putting on the floor is one on Fractals. We
do just want to put a screen up with the pictures but allow the visitor
to change some of the parameters and render the fractal in real time.
Has anyone done such an exhibit or could someone steer me into the right
direction.

Thanks in advance.
