I emailed the folks at the Museum of Science in Boston with this exact
same question a while ago, and they'll be able to give you a more
thorough answer than I can...but from what I remember, you need to run
all cables in a metal trough to shield them from interference, and you
need to use balanced cables to eliminate any interference that makes it
into the troughs. All the sound equipment needs to be shielded with
metal as well.

None of those options were practical for a van de graaff demo we do, so
we just scaled back in the size of the audience we were aiming for, and
did it without any sound system. Let us know if you find anything else
out!

At our museum, we do an electric show with a tesla
coil and vandegraf. Our docents have a hard time
speaking loud enough for our visitors and students to
hear them.

Is there ANY sound system that is safe to use with
this equipment?

We were wondering what other museums do to project
voices during the show.

Thanks!
