You missed the context of the material. Abbott was very pro-women's
rights. Read the history of it. It's a social commentary.

Here's an amusing aside. I went to look for it at the local college
library. It was in the 800s. As I scanned my way to it, I noticed the
book "The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie". Right next to it was "Flatland"!
That was my first chuckle. I went to the reference to let them know they
had misplaced a book, which should be in among math books. The librarian
took me back, and was amazed. We then looked in the card catalog to make
sure. Something was wrong. She happened to mention that particular set
of 800 number was for English fiction. We continued pondering the
mis-placement. All of a sudden it hit me, and I laughed, and so did the
librarian when I explained it to her. It was in the right place after
all. I'll let you ponder it. Another female librarian heard us laughing
and joined in. They wanted to know more, and I cautioned them about the
social commentary and women. They both expressed an enthusiastic desire
to read it. I'm sure you'll find it safe to read again. :-)

At the risk of sounding sexist or even pejorative, you might want to
read "Brain Sex" by (Dr.) Ann Moir and David Jessel. See the section on
math in the book. Also see this month's issue of Scientific American
magazine--the article on brain differences between males and females. We
just aren't the same brain-wise.
