Paid Internships (Becados) in Education and Media for a Health Education
Project Targeting Latino Children, Youth, and Families
The Self-Reliance Foundation is a Washington, D.C.-based nonprofit seeking
undergraduate and graduate communications/ education/ health science for paid
internships (becados). Interns (becarios) will assist with a new program
funded by a grant from the National Institutes of Health. The program, called
Conociendo Tu Cuerpo, will foster interest in health sciences among Latino
children and youth through several projects. Responsibilities involve assisting in
all aspects of program implementation. These may vary depending on the goals,
skills and interests of the intern.
Conociendo Tu Cuerpo will present hands-on science exhibits and health
science activities for young people and their families at community festivals,
health fairs and schools in the D.C. metropolitan area. Becarios will receive
training in presenting the exhibits and will be involved in the design,
development and presentation of other health science education activities. Becarios will
also help create and maintain a coalition of area organizations that will
pool their services and materials to bring health science education and health
literacy resources to D.C. area Latino youth and their parents. Key community
outreach partners include the Columbia Heights Community Science Workshop and
the National Children’s Museum.
The project will support short, daily radio programs highlighting health and
medical issues and biomedical science research and education, produced and
nationally distributed to Spanish-language radio stations in collaboration with
Hispanic Radio Network.
A Conociendo Tu Cuerpo website will be developed that will provide
opportunities for extended learning and provide resources in health science and health
careers. The site will have links to resources and programs on health science
education in the D.C. area. The program will also take advantage of SRF’s
National Hispanic Resource Helpline. This will be another way for students and
families to access more information after participating in Conociendo Tu Cuerpo’s
community presentations or listening to the radio capsules. Becarios will
have the opportunity to help develop the health science database and learn and
participate in the hotline’s services. Becarios will also help design, create,
and maintain Conociendo Tu Cuerpo’s website.
SRF is looking for undergraduate and graduate students with backgrounds and
interest in public health, science education, radio production, writing,
communications, community outreach, social marketing, and minority health and
education.
These will be paid internships and will last for a period of one year. Hours
are flexible to accommodate class schedule or other commitments. Internships
focusing on education will require attendance at community and school events.
Becarios must also:
Have an interest in and commitment to health science and health science
education and working with Latino and/or underprivileged youth.
Have strong interpersonal skills.
Be energetic.
Be fully bilingual (Spanish/English).
Those interns wishing to work on the Helpline and on writing and producing
radio capsule should have competent writing skills in Spanish.
