If you build a suismograph, build one that will really work. I suggest
building a long period style which is insensitive to vistors but
sensitive to distant eqrthquakes. I built one for the Science Centre in
Wollongong which records distant earthquakes well even though it sits on
the exhibit floor in an acrylic box. Visitor noise, wind noise on the
building and the effects of large waves on the nearby beach are all
noticeable but they don't mask significant eqarthquakes. Although
Australia is a very 'quiet' continent we record eathquakes from New
Zealand, Indonesia etc. Recently for example many visitors came to look
our the recording of the Tsunami earthquake. From our site this
earthquake was 'off scale'.
