In addition to picking up good sessions at AAM and ASTC... the Visitor Studies Association (VSA) is a great resource for learning about program evaluation. The 2006 annual VSA conference is July 25-29 in Grand Rapids, Michigan. The conference itself is interesting, and the pre-conference workshops are always informative and useful (in my experience, anyway!). While some VSA members are "outside" evaluators, many are in-house evaluators or museum and science center folks who need to learn to incorporate audience research and evaluation into their work.
There's also a travelship awarded to a qualified first-time attendee each year - check out the VSA website at www.visitorstudies.org for more info - the award application deadline is April 1.

Does anyone know of a workshop/professional development opportunity that
shows you ways to assess the impact of your science education programs
(i.e., do-it-yourself methods as opposed to hiring an outside evaluator)?
BTW, I'm more interested in assessing direct interaction programs here
(e.g., outreach to schools, teacher workshops, etc.) than I am in visitor
experience type situations (e.g., exhibits, planetarium shows, etc.).
Any and all leads will be greatly appreciated!
