ISEN-ASTC-L is a service of the Association of Science-Technology Centers
Incorporated, a worldwide network of science museums and related institutions.

What DO people learn in science centers? That perennial question is the
focus of the November/December 2005 issue of ASTC Dimensions, "Active and
Engaged: Science Centers and Informal Learning," which was mailed to member
organizations and individual subscribers earlier this month.

Among the featured articles are
--a condensed version of Colin Johnson's report for ASTC on "Science Centers
as Learning Environments" (see also
http://www.astc.org/resource/education/johnson_scicenters.htm)
--an excerpt from the Exploratorium's new book, "Fostering Active Prolonged
Engagement: The Art of Creating APE Exhibits"
--a piece by David Anderson on the implications of his long-term-memory
research with world exposition attendees
--research analyst Richard Toon's thoughts on moving "beyond the deficit
model" to assess learning outcomes (also posted online at
http://www.astc.org/pubs/dimensions.htm)
--Kirsten Ellenbogen and Kevin Crowley's suggested framework for
investigating family learning outside museum walls
--an Alan Friedman essay on "Measuring the Immeasurable"
--a list of print and online resources related to informal science learning.

Five free copies of ASTC Dimensions are mailed to each ASTC-member
organization; check with your director's office to find the current issue.
Individual subscriptions are also available; visit
http://www.astc.org/pubs/dimensions/subscribe_now.htm.
