Hello Summer!

First, I'd like to commend you on your use of "shazaminess"....A very
bold statement, if I may say so myself!

Fiber....Hmmmmm.....We have one from wayyyyy back when here, a
huuuugggggeeeee horsetail about 8' or so, but unfortunately I don't know
where it came from...I'll ask around...

In the meantime~

You've probably been there already, but I'd be remiss if I didn't bring
'em up...

OK, this one has some 78" pieces, but they are expensive, and might not
exactly be what you're looking for...So be forewarned!

Hmmmm, it looks like they might have one that is close to what you need,
but it's jacketed....With a swiss army knife (or wire strippers) and a
MacGuyver attitude, could you peel back the jacketing pretty easily? I
can't imagine it'd be tooooo hard, but on the other hand, I'm not the
one plunking down cash for it...

You could also contact someone who works with fiber in theater types
settings ~ perhaps give Lightspeed a call? They may have some good
thoughts on where to go/how much they are/etc. Contact info below...

One last place - they use a lot of fiber optics to light spas/hot
tubs...You may be able to get what you need through a supplier locally,
or at least *see* what you may be ordering online....

Best wishes, and thanks for the pleasant diversion!

Hello, vast sea of equipmental expertise, I salute you:

I'm looking for a replacement for our fiber optic bundle in a
light/optics program. There are no markings on it; I've looked online,
and such items seem few and far between. Here's exactly what we're
looking for:

Fibers between .5 and 1.0 mm in diameter
Fibers 4-5 feet long
Fibers unjacketed
About 300-500 fibers
Bound at one end securely, aligned perfectly
The other ends are unbounded
And the clincher? It looks like a horse's tail.

I don't know if what we have is "actual" fiber optic cable. Are these
available pre-fab? I've contacted a few fiber optics companies, and
they offer a kit for producing networks, not necessarily demonstration
tools. The only place I've seen these big bundles is in science museum
programs/demos.

The major science supply companies sell "fiber optic demo kits," but the
ones I've spied are not large-scale enough. I'm looking for huge,
auditorium-show shazaminess.

Maybe I'll just pick up one of those "fiber optic dome" things and
dismantle it.

Any help would be appreciated, if you "opt" to do so...

<grin>

-Summer
