ISEN-ASTC-L is a service of the Association of Science-Technology Centers
Incorporated, a worldwide network of science museums and related institutions.

I thought everyone might find this of interest. It nicely connects to the
sundials on the Mars rovers that will be landing on Mars this coming month.

The EarthDial Project

EarthDial is a sundial of a standard design (although allowing
for individual variations, especially reflecting local cultures) with a
Web camera always on it. A Website of The Planetary Society will then
display near-real-time images of all these dials - one will be able to
look over a single Web page and see how solar time varies all over the
Earth! At the Web site below, you can find full instructions for how
to build your own EarthDial at your school or in your backyard.
EarthDial is also a tremendous educational opportunity about astronomy
and geography and earth sciences and the globe we live on.
Please participate in this project and encourage others. I'd be
*extremely* grateful if you'd forward this information to sundial
enthusiasts and science educators whom you may know that live in
"unusual" longitudes (and latitudes - we've already got a letter of
interest from the research station at the South Pole!). ["Unusual"
refers to those longitudes and latitudes not in Europe and North
America.] Let's make this truly a planet-wide project!
