Ed and Bridget,

Thanks for the e-mail and the clarification.  When I refer to marketing
costs, I am mostly interested in marketing and pr.  I am not including any
salaries or building costs.  However, I am including production costs for
collateral materials, paid advertising campaigns, graphic design,
promotions, media buys, etc.

Please let me know if you need me to be more specific.  Do you know what
percentage of your total revenue is spent on the items I listed above?

Bridget and Randee-

    I think you're asking the wrong question.  The percentage is going to
vary greatly from one museum to another depending on what is included in
your expenses.  For example, Bridget, are salaries and building rent or
maintenance included in the Cornell budget?  And, are salaries included in
your marketing budget?  Without knowing this any comparison between
institutions has little value.

    If you are including all the expenses (salaries and building and
grounds, which are often left out of university or city museums) in the
budget, 10% seems quite high.  But, the more important question is what are
you getting for your marketing budget and is it producing the results you
need.
