Dear Carol, I'm sorry, but I too think your answer was out of line. An
IBCLC after my name doesn't mean I know everything there is to know about
BF. Hopefully I know where to look for the answers - texts, friends,
Lactnet, etc. The value of "magic initials" after our names is that we
know WHEN we don't know, and instead of making something up as an answer,
we admit we don't know and ask! Saying "I don't know, but I'll find out"
is not a violation of ethics, it is using your common sense. As a HCP I do
it all the time when parents ask me off-the-wall stuff that I haven't got a
clue about. They seem happy with my answer and eager to share the answers
I eventually come up with. And sometimes the answer isn't instant.
Sometimes it takes me a little time to find the answer they need. And
sometimes it's better if they seek out the answer and make an investment in
learning. Sincerely, Pat in SNJ
