In the paragraph preceding this quote Lawrence speaks of "mild mucocutaneous infection" associated with thrush and mastitis and diaper rash so I think when she states invasive candidal infection occurs infrequently she is discussing something other than the mouth/bottom/breast entities we are all so aware of. As bad as mouth/bottom/breast candidal infections are INVASIVE candidal infections are much worse and at times life threatening. Thankfully they are rare.
