If no one has mentioned this already, the magazine Childbirth Instructor has an article in the Nov./Dec issue called "What to Make of Babywise." It contains a good description of the background and premises of the book, the lack of supporting material or references to support it, and some appropriate ways to educate parents about it. It is basically an article for childbirth educators in assisting them to deal with this in classes. The article itself is well-referenced, and is written by Patty Donohue-Carey, B.S. LCCE, CLE. The other interesting article in the same journal is one by Marie Biancuzzo. It is in the Breastfeeding section and is called, "Off the Charts: Weight Loss and Gain in Breastfed Infants." Hopefully, the childbirth educators are reading carefully - especially those that espouse bottle feeding, and spout bottle-feeding weight gain norms. Deanne Francis, R.N.
