Dear lactnetters, one question, one comment. Dummies- I was formula fed because my mother, as stated by her, after reading the books on BF, felt that it was too much trouble, leaking, sore nipples, etc. . I was born in 1971.I refused formula and they had to give me cows milk. Well, even then they had to fight to get me to take it. Solids started at 4 months. I had a dummy from the time I was born until 5 years of age. I can still remember the night I lost it in my sleep. I was so upset when my mom wouldnt give me another one. Past age two I only used it at night to help me fall asleep. I remember the suckling calming me. I do agree that early on it can intefere with establishing a working breastfeeding relationship. The suckling has a purpose , to help the milk come in and become established. I tell moms if latched correctly they could suck for days and they would not get sore cracked nipples. I saw a mom today and her HCP started her on OCPS with estrogen at 2 wks pp ...urgh..... Before BF wonderfully, abundant supply. Within 2 days milk drying up, baby fussy. Now baby one and 1/2 months and mom still can pump 1/2 oz each time. She is now seeing a wonderful NP who switched her to depo. Watched the baby feed, a champ, even with moms flat nipples.Perfect latch and nutritive suckle for 5 mins with swallow then fussy. Baby then took 2 oz formula on breast with sns and fell asleep. Wt gain good, mom giving formula at home in bottle. Gave her sns and manual pump, and instructions on use with formula until her milk supply can increase. Fenugreek 2 tabs TID and feeding on demand at least q 2 hours. Have baby suckle s sns and then when baby fussy introduce tube into babes mouth. Told her to pump after every feed to further stimulate and stockpile milk to use in sns. I will call her on friday, in two days. Did I forget anything? Also has anyone else seen this, ancedotally are her chances good of rebuilding a supply. She told me she had a huge supply before OCP's. I am trying to educate the HCP's but I am one LC in charge of the whole package. Program design, implementation and answering all consults hospital wide.
