Hello, I wonder if anyone has ideas on how to deal with unsuportive OB/Gyns. I deal with two (both men in there 40's) who are just awful when it comes to suporting the wishes of a pregnant woman to breastfeed. One of them feels that Breastfeeding is good but that many women (especially low income/low education women) are too irresponsible to Breastfeed! His view is outragous and I have told him so, but how do I go about changing his mind? Number two is much worse. He works in the same practice as my midwife and I have on occasion had to see him. I've never liked him and so felt that my adversion to him was on more of a personal level. But recently I have seen a few new mothers (individually) all of them distraught because they really wanted to nurse their babies but this doctor had perscribed them phsych. drugs which were not recomended to breastfeed with and refused to change the script to drugs which were ok. All of these women began to have anxiety towards the end of their pregnancies and none had ever taken psych drugs before and they all told me they had made it clear to the Dr. that they wanted to nurse. Personally I think they all would have been fine after a couple of sessions with a psychologist, most seemed to just be having the normal "what have I gotten myself into?!" anxiety. He has told women that breastfeeding isn't that important and they would just have to deal with the fact that they can't nurse. He is also notorious for over perscribing. He is extremely mean and has no understanding that his behavior is probably what is perpetuating the anxiety of his clients. I know that many others in my community have issues with him but know on seems to be able to do anything about him. I refuse to believe that there is nothing that can be done and would appreciate any advice.
