I believe the smoking has everything to do with unhappy baby and miserable mom. When I worked for the WIC Program, I started to look at one site's statistics in regard to smoking. I think other LCs may notice this but sometimes you just have a run on similiar problems. Like one week everyone seems to have breast infections or sore nipples, etc. Within a short period of time I had several mothers complain that their babies were fussy when breastfed but not fussy on ABMs. All of the mothers smoked but none more than a pack a day(according to the mothers). These women all quit breastfeeding because they felt their babies did not do well on breast milk. Later on I always kept an eye out for mothers who stated that there babies were less fussy on formula than on the breast. All of them smoked or had smokers in the house. Wish they'd do a study on it because I do believe it is related. Valerie W.
