One of my former WIC clients has a partner who now knows more than most husbands do about using a breastpump! She needed an electric pump, was stuck way out in the country w/out a car where it was inconvenient for me to get to her, but her boyfriend worked at an auto repair shop near where I was headed, so we arranged for me to take the pump to the garage & give it to him. Well, into the garage I walked, carrying the pump, and out came the guy AND all his mechanic buddies wiping the oil & grease off their hands. ALL of them clustered right around as I explained how to use it, what kinds of things the mom should be looking at - complete with all my usual exuberant and often kind of personal hand gestures, and my standard demonstration of how the thing works on my 2 cheeks (on my face!,of course). First I felt kinda embarrassed, then I figured, what the heck, it's a learning moment, and gave it my full routine... Those young guys, mostly between 19 and 25 or so, were really interested! Hey, it's a machine, they were curious, and they were totally willing to hear about why it was so important for this guy's baby to get breastmilk - said they'd tell their girlfriends/wives! I expected a lot of guffawing & wisecracks, but they were totally respectful, took it quite seriously. I learned a lot from that experience!
