I would really appreciate some input on this situation with a mother with
mastitis. She originally got mastitis in her left breast when baby was 3
weeks old, a very severe case, was hospitalized for high fever. Her left
breast was huge and very red. She was on IV vancomycin for 10 days, things
improved. About 2 weeks later she presents with fever again and mastitis in
right breast, she was readmitted and treated. She also has an over
supply, after nursing she can pump 3oz out of one breast. The baby is doing
fine but I am not sure what advice to give. If we try to stop her pumping we
may leave her open to mastitis again, after she pumps she feels relief. She
is now on her last two days of antibiotic treatment. She is under the care of
an infectious control specialist as well as her OB. When they tried to
culture the original mastitis the did not come up with organism. They only
aspirated milk??? Today I told her to try Cabbage Leaves to maybe reduce
supply. This mom cannot go through much more, Her OB may want her to cold
turkey???? You can reply to me at [log in to unmask] I just came back from
the La Leche League Conference and it was wonderful. Nuala Murphy RN IBCLC
