Jeanne, I also work in a hospital with a level II NICU, though we keep all our sick babies unless they have a serious cardiac problem or need ECMO for meconium aspiration. Our NICU moms wash their pump parts with plain soap and water after each pumping. (Hand washing soap while in the hospital. Dishwashing detergent at home. Rinse well. Air dry as opposed to towel.) They use the same kit for as long as they pump (i.e. months) unless they misplace something. We have NEVER had a problem with this in the 20 years I've worked there, even with 23 weekers. The moms pump into sterile volufeeds and attach sterile caps. NEC has been nonexistent in the babies who have been fed breastmilk exclusively. I can't imagine the work of sterilizing the parts each time or the expense of a new kit (hundreds of them?) each time. Just haven't found it necessary. I think you'll find a lot of information on this topic in the archives.
