In UK we celebrate motherhood on the 4th Sunday in Lent, it is called
Mothering Sunday. As a child in the county of Devon in the South Hams
region, I remember picking wild flowers, always violets and primroses to make
up little posies on the Saturday afternoon. We took these to the parish
church on Sunday morning and placed them on a table. During the service
every child went to the altar steps to be given a posy which we then
presented to our mother, grandmother, etc. Women without their family
present were also given a posy. I was baptised and confirmed in the Church
of England. Helen Woodman, NCT Breastfeeding Counsellor, Storrington, UK
