Hello, I have a question about short tongues. The mom had a 3 day birth experience. I saw the baby at about 2 weeks old. The mom's nipples were compressed flat after a feed with a white line along the middle. The baby was very disorganized in his suck pattern. He had a hard time calming down to latch. This is his normal pattern according to the mom. Mom's nipples are long (I did not actually measure them...) Every time you open the baby's mouth his tongue is on the roof. The tongue looks short. We worked on latching on techniques and I showed her ways to get the baby's tongue down. By the end of our session he was latching on without any pain. Today I saw the mom again. The baby is 9 weeks old. He opens his mouth when the nipple is presented and his lips are flanged out. The mom is not feeling a lot of pain during the feed. She says she feels very raw in the nipple area most of the time. There is still a line on the nipple on one side and a few white dots on the other side in the middle of the nipple. The baby does not pull out his tongue. I did look under and do not see a lot of skin (as in a short frenulum). I do feel it is short and not cupping the nipple/areaola well. I have referred her to an oral surgeon I have used before for short frenulums to get a second opinion. Does anyone have ideas for a short tongue? Or is it just a waiting process until the baby gets bigger?
