I am new to this list, and this is my first posting, so please bear with me. I am a LLL Leader, and have a long-time member who has recently started experiencing problems nursing her LARGE 2-year-old daughter, Emily. I have looked in the BF Answer Book re: sore nipples, but all info. seems to be focussed on NB's. Mom and I are baffled by the whole thing. Here is how she describes it: Mom has really sore nipples when she is nursing. She feels a "really sharp pain that starts after just a few seconds at the breast and stops as soon as the session is finished". Her nipples are cracked and peeling and there are very small scabs covering a good part of them. She seems to get periods of pain like this every couple of months but it usually only lasts a couple of days and then is gone. Recently, though, it has gone on for about 2-3 weeks now and is a lot more painful. I suggested that maybe Emily was getting lazy about the latch, so they have gone 'back to the basics' with Mom checking lips, tongue, etc. Everything looks fine. Note: Emily is still an enthusiastic nurser, nursing 'round-the-clock', about every 2 to 3 hours, for short sessions of 5 to 10 minutes. Mom is still amenorrheaic (no surprise, with that much stimulation!). Any suggestions or ideas from you experts out there? *********************************************** The LACTNET mailing list is powered by L-Soft's renowned LISTSERV(R) list management software together with L-Soft's LSMTP(TM) mailer for lightning fast mail delivery.
