Watched carefully and taped segment. As Rachael said no mention of output. Rec via AAP that baby be seen and Weighed on 3rd day after discharge. Suggested weighing (again per AAP) before and after feedings at home if unable to get to dr (AARRGGHH). Another major glaring mistake was the hx of breast surgery (reduction) at 15. This baby should have been followed closely. It was dismissed as not relevant by surgeon. Unnoticed by ob, perinatal staff and so on. Nobody caught it as a high risk factor. This poor young woman is being tried for everyone else's ignorance and negligence. Is there anyway we can support her at her trial? The crime was that she couldn't go to the dr/clinic because her medicaid was tied up in a bureaucratic snafu. I work in an office where you are NOT seen if you don't have your Medicaid slip. I know I make the office manager MAD when I take a baby in the back, weigh and do a quick look see and review with mom when these sort of circumstances come up (no medicaid slip). It infuriates me that we can track my car via computer through the toll booths on the expressway in NJ, but we can't get newborns signed up for medicaid in a prompt, timely fashion in NJ. If mom comes into hospital and delivers on medicaid or with no ins. then baby should be instantly signed up for NJ coverage via computer before baby ever leaves hospital. There should be no questions about newborn coverage and who pays in the first few months. The state should care enough about all babies to see that this is covered - period. (These insurance snafus also happen with private insurers). Yes, I know parents should take care of all of this during the pregnancy, but you wouldn't believe how often they let it slide. I don't think a newly delivered mom should have to be treking to the Medicaid office right after giving birth to sign her baby up - she has 14 days to do this. And depending on the time of mo you deliver it can be almost a whole month before you get a slip! It should be instant. Another problem is when it is an under age mom and baby is a dependent of a dependent. Oh aren't you sorry I got started on this! Elizabeth Baldwin will be in NJ for conf in spring with that "La Leche Society" :-) I'm really looking forward to meeting her. She has helped me several times via phone with moms with legal problems. She is quite an asset to the BF community. After I cool off I'll go to bed - it's late. G'Night all. Pat in SNJ
