Dear Janette, In your post about pancreatic enzymes, I ssume this is for maternal ingestion? If so, I have had some experience with pancreatic enzymes of vegetable/plant derivitives and/or bovine and pork derivitives. Patients with cystic fibrosis and pancreatic insufficiency require enzymes for digestion. The standard dosage is titrated on lipase per kg and can vary from patient to patient depending on steatorrhea, gas and weight gain. I had my daughter on a plant derivitive (OTC) along with standard Pancrease or Creon (prescription, because this is an "orphan disease" plus insurance coverage). The plant type was supposedly easier to "digest" but it stands to reason the enteric coated prescriptions withstand the acid ph of the stomach and aid in better digestion .....a few years ago there was a warning of colon lining fibrosis but that was demonstated in very, very high dosages. It did ,however, lead to a reduction of capsules with high levels of lipase, amylase and protease. Also taking Zantac with them, the H2 histamine receptor blockers (cimetidine and ranitidine) ,can reduce gastric acid secretion and have been effective for some patients in increasing body weight and reducing stool and nitrogen, but their long term safety and efficacy is not reported. I have witnessed no problems associated with pancreatic enzymes taken by lactating mothers. Please feel free to contact me about this. I have the library on CF and pancreas issues at my fingertips!
