Anne: I haven't heard the whole situation, but for what my opinion is worth here goes...Has this mother been tested for diabetes? I'd find out how her blood sugar was during pregnancy. Does it make a difference if she eats a high protein meal before going to bed? One possible solution is to keep a low fat, diet shake (argh...I know it's really adult formula), by the bed side and when awakening for the first feeding she should drink it. The other thing that seems to work well in these cases is the use of Glyconutrients in supplement form <Mannetech is the brand that has a patented formula and has a combination with wild yam>. The other thing that might be causing this is wild swings in hormone levels so anything that could help that would improve the situation (Wild yam and vitex--which I know you are familiar with). Soy products (including soy powder) would be a good start for boosting her phytoestrogen levels as well. Find out if she is having night sweats in addition to the hunger, as that would be a good clue to whether it's estrogen related.
