I am seeking any information on vasospasm of nipples. I received a phone call from a mom who has been nursing a baby for 5 months. She has been beside herself for 3-4 months with severe pain in breasts during, after, nursing. She discribes the pain as burning and to the point she is ready to throw in the towel even though she does not want to. she has seen other lc and mds and no one has been able to help her. Her latest treatment is tertrazole on her nipples. I have not seen her yet but I surmise she is experiencing vasospasm of nipples. she discribes that just taking a shower and having water hit her breasts triggers the pain. She ran outside without a coat and it is about 10 degrees out and that set off the pain. Tells me that her nipples get very white in color when baby unlatches breast. I intend to see her and do a face to face assessment with in the next day. Can any experts suggest a plan of care? I read in KA's text the suggestion about nifedipine, nitropaste, warmth to the breast and nipples, and supplements of calcium and magnesium.can anyone send me some steps to follow. I would greatly appreciate it. If it is what I suspect, I plan to share information with the others who have seen her. my other thought is ductal thrush but that is second on my differential. I have searched lacnet. not much on it. Thanks, Joy Motsiff PNP IBCLC Cambridge, New York EMail [log in to unmask]
