Hello, I am an RN coordinating a prenatal screening program. All contact is by phone, purpose is to be available to answer general questions and support mom during pregnancy... and possibly pick up risk factors she might not mention to the ob. One of my patients is diabetic, on insulin right now but anticipating return to po hypoglycemics pp. I asked her if she planned to bf (EDC 12-25-98). She said no, like she had never considered it. When I asked her why, she said she had bf her first baby and really enjoyed it, even though she had to return to work and pump, etc. In the interim she had "breast reduction surgery" (her words, and I don't have access to any records to say exactly what kind) and just thought it would be impossible. She had talked to an aquaintance who successfully bf after (assumably the same) surgery, but thought that was "just a fluke" and didn't want to "get her hopes up." I told her to talk to her ob about it, and that it was definitely possible she could nurse. I also told her to tell her endocrinologist that she was planning to bf so he could prescribe her po hypoglycemics with that in mind. Was I wrong about bf being possible after surgery??? I know there is unlikely to be an easy answer without knowing exactly what kind of surgery, but in general, isn't the only way to know just to try?? Just second-guessing myself, Vicki BrittonRN Olive Branch, MS ___________________________________________________________________ You don't need to buy Internet access to use free Internet e-mail.
