I may have ruined a baby's suck. I went to his C-section for breech presentation. Baby was 40 weeks, weight 7 lbs. 8 oz, 3400 grams. This kid was juicy. Not the best respiratory effert but had some cry, was given the standard blow by O2 , drying and tactile stim. Baby slowly pinked but had nasal flaring and copious oral and nasal secretions. I carefully bulb suctioned the mouth and nose repeatedly along with giving chest PT. This didn't really help so then the good Dr Rob went with the deep NP suction catheter which cleared the secretions and stopped the nasal flaring. I offered the baby my finger to suck on but he closed his mouth as if to tell me he no longer trusts me. I did get him to take my finger and he of course gummed it kind of forcefully. "Take that Dr Fankenstein". He did calm and start sucking on my finger alittle and I removed my finger. Baby first fed briefly at 2 + hrs old. He latches briefly, sucks some then cries and pulls away. Mom is supine post op. Mom has 2 good nurses, one an IBCLC, helping her now. I did reassure the parents to relax and babies have good fuel stores etc. Any suggestions? -Rob Rob Cordes DO, FAAP, FACOP Wilkes Barre, PA mail to:[log in to unmask]
