I requested that I be able to see [my patients only] after delivery, but the hospital says I must be credentialed first (have physician backup, show educational background, etc. and pay a $350. application fee). >> I am on staff at four hospitals and never have to pay an application fee, but maybe things are different in urban settings. A private LC should be able to visit a mom at anytime during regular visiting hours. In terms of permitting the babies in the room during visiting hours, that is a mother's right and I would raise one big stink if they wouldn't permit that. In other words, I would tell the staff, then bring the baby to me because I am going home. When they say you can't you aren't discharged yet, the answer is, Then bring the AMA form (Against Medical Advice) I am going to go home with my baby now, if you don't let me have the baby now. You can decide, let me have the baby in the room now or complete the paperwork for me leaving AMA. One problem is that not letting the baby in the room when the mother wants violates one of the BFHI guidelines. Nursing staff hate to have to deal with people that leave AMA, it really creates lots of paperwork hassles for them and usual protocols dictate that supervisors and administrators need to be notified. The other option is for the LC to discuss this with the pregnant mom, and have the mom present in writing a request to her Dr. that support from my special friend (who is the LC) is extremely important to my sense of well being and I request that the Doctor write an order that permit this special friend to visit outside of visiting hours.
