Another request for info from all of the 'wise ones' on this list; At work yesterday I spoke with a mom whose breastpump was due back. It came out that she really didn't want to stop breastfeeding, but some of the specialists she has seen think her rare disorder may/will resolve sooner if she stops. Anyway, she has something called migratory osteoporosis. It apparently has many other names as well....transient (or painful) bone marrow edema, transient osteoporosis of the hip. It develops during the 3rd trimester and resolves after delivery. Her bone scan showed so much damage/thinning of the bone especially in her right hip that she is wheelchair bound to help prevent fractures. Her baby is 2mo. and she has a 1yr old. She would like to continue, but if weaning will help this resolve she will. Some of the specialists think it may be self limiting and weaning will not have much influence. I know about the study that shows a rebound in bone mass after weaning, but I'm not sure that is relevant in this special situation. Has anyone out there heard of this or had any experience with it? I also still have questions about the mom on hyperal/TPN who wants to breastfeed. I got a few responses, but they were mostly words of encouragement for her (and I am most thankful for that..so is she) and not evidence of the safety. Weird sentence I know, but hopefully everyone understands.
