I recently did some searching for information about nursing toddlers for a presentation and would be glad to share some of the web sites that had some great breastfeeding information. Several articles by Katherine Dettwyler at various sites www.lalecheleague.org/FAQ (several references on nursing toddlers) www.nurturing.ca/ebmarnie2.htm ( "the Benefits of Extended Breastfeeding" ) naturalchild.com/guest/norma_jane_bumgarner.html ( "Why Mothers Nurse their Children into Toddlerhood" ) "Mothering your nursing toddler" by Norma Jane Bumgarner, 1982 ( order from La Leche League ) Also www.telepath.com/wordwrks/mynt/Motherly_advice.html ( personal accounts from mothers for Ms. Bumgarner's upcoming revision of the above book ) www.parentsplace.com/readroom/breastfeeding/bf140.html ( "Is there any Value in Breastfeeding past one year?" ) www.geocities.com/Heartland/8148/toddler.html ("Nursing a Toddler" - with a list of links of other sites ) I hope this will be of some help. I would ask your friend the reasons she wants to wean and see if they have to do with lack of support from family or insensitive comments. Nursing her child for as long as he needs to is worth the commitment on so many issues ie: baby's self confidence, health, intelligence, comfort, security... If she decides to wean anyway, be supportive and compliment her on her committment and loving decision to nurse her baby for as long as she was able to!
