Hi all, I saw Joyce's "Yes, but" client for a pump rental today. She rescheduled several times, citing pressure from her family not to bother trying relactating. She declined a consult and an SNS, has decided to try pumping first and see what she gets. The approach I took with her was to set out her options succinctly, and then end the conversation with an invitation to call me back with her decision. She had some cultural misconceptions about breastfeeding that were worrying her, her mother taught her that milk goes bad in the breast while women are at work, and that she would need to "pump and dump" when she returned home from any separation form her baby. She is also feeling unready for this baby, who was preterm and was born before she had "done her reading". When I declined to pressure her, she was able to air these concerns and accept information. -- Catherine Watson Genna, IBCLC NYC mailto:[log in to unmask]
