I have also come across this as Nursing Mothers' folklore but have not
heard of a rationalisation. It has been suggested that washing the breast
& nipple area after feeds with sodium bicarbonate solution may be helpful
and I have occasionally suggested this to mothers but have not had much feedback
about the results.
