<<would some of you please give me an estimate of how many infants you see and / or work with that have presented with this type of problem (in a year or in a month)?>> Jack gave a wonderful response to your question, which I would agree with. I will tell you that from my experience, also, I don't see a refusal to latch after one bottle. Babies in my setting don't usually get bottles for no good reason, but we do have moms occasionally who insist on giving supplements in the hospital despite our advice, and I can't remember one of these ever refusing the breast when it was offered again. The only cases of breast refusal I can remember were when baby was not getting milk from the breast, usually after several days of latching well, not just one, and like Jack said--they go where the milk is--cup, bottle, finger, whatever. Or from babies who were not latching well, but could get milk from the bottle and not the breast--they quit trying the breast pretty fast, too. I would wonder how accurate a story you have been told, since mom called you at one week, not the day it happened. Has mom maintained a good milk supply? If so and baby really won't latch, I'd be looking for a chiropractor or cranio-sacral therapist to evaluate the baby.
