I apologize for my most recent post being sent before completed (courtesy of my teenager). Jan, I am with you on the pump companies being more responsible for who is handing out the pumps....this is really a sore spot with me. I asked our local pump rep. about this and was told that the "retail" division was completely separate from the "professional" division. Why??? It infuriates me to know that women can go to this clothing store in my town, buy an expensive layette and casually be sold a breast pump by someone that has NEVER even put a pump together (this salesperson never fails to tell the moms to use tea bags on sore nipples and to limit bf to 10 min. per breast...AARRGGGHH!!! I realize that pumps are very helpful in certain situations, and did not mean to sound in my previous post that I never advise breastpumps to be used. However, I do feel that pumps are way over-rated, and certainly NOT a necessity in normal bf situations. I teach my moms hand expression, and if they want information about pumps, I also give them this and refer them to a pump depot in town. If the mom truly cannot afford a pump and needs one, I do have several small breastpumps that are available for loan. If the mom is separated from baby because of hospitalization, I refer them to a durable medical goods supplier that accepts Medicaid reimbursement for pumps. I have recently begun a very small private business in addition to my work at WIC. So far I have not felt that I need to stock pumps (the mom has usually already been to the clothing store) but time will tell.... And about those pillows...I feel that we are just a gaget crazy society. It reminds of the ad that was in a baby catalog awhile back..it showed a mom in a "special" nightgown, seated in a "special" glider, with her feet on a certain "special" stool, and her baby on one of those "special" pillows. If I would have seen an ad like that 17 yrs ago when I was thinking about bf my first born, I would have said, "Yikes, I cannot afford to bf!!". Pam Holland, BS, IBCLC WIC BF Coordinator, Savannah, GA
