I just spoke with a client who has been dealing with hearing loss since early in her pregnancy. She was told during the pregnancy that it was probably due to her "increased fluid load". When it persisted into the postpartum period she expressed her concern to me. I told her I did not feel that that was an appropriate rational and encouraged her to see an ENT MD, which she did. It seems that there is some kind of nerve damage and the ENT does not feel that she will recover the hearing loss. To say the least, this mother is very unhappy and has continued to have much difficulty with dizziness to the point of bouts of nausea. The ENT has ordered an MRI of her head. It is scheduled for next week. She has been told by the radiology dept. that the baby has to be taken off the breast for 48 hrs (from the MRI time). WHY?? She is not getting any radioactive dye; although they did not tell her if she was getting any meds for this procedure. I have her calling the radiologist to get the specifics. But, in the meantime can anyone give us some insight on this. Thanks! Kathy Lipke, RN, IBCLC email: [log in to unmask]
