On Jude's post about the jaundiced neonate -concern that baby has not returned
to birth weight by day 5 -- I have been reassuring parents for years that it
is okay if their baby hasn't regained birthweight until 3 weeks of age. Is
this still an acceptable parameter? What I look for in weight is a steady
pattern of gain. At the breastfeeding group that I worked with we would weigh
the babies on a weekly basis for the first two months and then, if all was
well we would encourage weight measurements only on every second visit and
teach the parents baby-watching. If there was a problem with weight gain then
the baby would be monitored biweekly or on alternate days for a period until
we could determine what was happening.
