okay, everybody that knows about NICU policies, 'splain this one. although i am not even on call, i have had two cases in the last two weeks in which the NICU staff told mothers to only feed every four hours. staff members say that the babies in question are only fed EBM every four hours, wouldn't let the mothers nurse more often, and gave written instructions to only bf every four hours at home! the two cases were at two different hospitals, and no, neither one was the "ezzo" hospital (it is in the area, and i KNOW that's what they say). one mother was also told some of the usual stuff about not being used as a pacifier, not having a spoiled baby, and making the baby cry it out, etc. aside from assuming the worst about NICU staff (tempting, tempting), i fear that these blatant cases and the fact that written instructions included this information, means something serious. that is, something more than just one staff member's prejudices. does anybody know? one case was related to me by a witness present with the mother, and her response to this was so overwhelming, i can't describe it. carol b.
