HMF is formula, of course. The name is a marketing ploy to take the emphasis away from the fact that it is ABM. Doctors are caring professionals who will use all means at their disposal to give a tiny baby the best chance of survival. If what they are being told is that HMF will do this, naturally they feel they must prescribe it. Of course, there may be another issue - if they don't use all means at their disposal and the baby dies, will the parents commence legal action if they know about HMF and know that it wasn't prescribed, whether or not it was the correct solution? (or is this too cynical an attitude?) As always, perhaps education and information is what is needed. Is human milk available for these babies so that we don't have to fill their immature systems with chemicals and modified fats? Are parents and health professionals able to make informed decisions with the long term effects of intervention in mind? Back to the marketing issue, have you noticed the trends in 'formulas' for mums! talk about marketing - if they won't give it to their babies anymore, we'll tell them it's good for their milk supply! What happened to a good healthy diet - for mum and baby. sigh Querida David, Alyangula, NT Counsellor, NT Correspondence Group Editor 'Upfront' Member NT Publications review team Email: [log in to unmask]
