Thank-you to all who replied and helped to provide a better understanding
about the Bradley Method of childbirth. It has been several years since I
have taught lamaze and actively worked in L/D. It had become very
frustrating when the majority of our clients began "requesting" epidurals and
"pain-free" labor/deliveries. It is interesting to note...lately the L/D
nurses have been talking about how they can reduce the amount of medicated
births. "If we could do 1:1 with our patients rather than 1:2-3, then we
could reduce the amount of medication". Unfortunately we need to once again
re-educate the parents and get the doctors to help as well. Both of my
births were unmedeicated .....the first was even with forceps...the second
came so quickly that the doctor almost did't make it.
An update on the mother who was so difficult....Baby was discharged and
mom continues to pump. I believe she was a poor representative of Bradley
and much of our difficulty with her was personality characteristics. To make
a long story short: She needed to be in control of everyone and everything
in her life. The unexpected birth only compounded her inability to maintain
control . A week after their discharge we had another mom that was Bradley
educated. She was pleasant and a good model for the nurses taking care of
her. I have begun compiling information about Bradley and hope to help
educate our staff...especially since they are becoming more interested in
"natural" childbirth.
Sincerely,
