Ros asked for some references supporting continued feeding during diarrhea. Here's a couple that might help: Haffejee, Ismail E. Cow's Milk-Based Formula, Human Milk, and Soya Feeds in Acute Infantile Diarrhea: A Therapeutic Trial. Journal of Pediatric Gastroenterology and Nutrition, 1990. 10:193-198 "....in the case of rotaviral GE, continuation of breast-feeding during the illness significantly shortens the duration of the diarrhea when compared to continuation of cow's milk-based formula feeds." Walterspiel JN et al. Secretory Anti-Giardia lamblia Antibodies in Human milk: Protective Effect Against Diarrhea. Pediatrics 1994. 93 (1):28-31. "...anti-Giardia sIgA in human milk protects against symptoms of giardiasis, but not against colonization..." "The finding of a significant association between anti-Giardia secretory IgA in human milk and prevention of diarrhea due to Giardia adds to the evidence of a protective role of specific sIgA against giardiasis and further strengthens the importance of breast-feeding infants to prevent diarrheal disease." As I understand it, the infants in this study were infected with giardia but did not show symptoms of diarrhea while breastfed, the way the babies on formula did.
