Helen Vermilya's posting about a poor weight gain baby made me remember many of the frustrating times where I wanted to "do it all". There are limits, though. One of the more important things for me is that I can be found. Staff at the hospital not only take messages, but they call my home. An answering machine is of great use to me. If a mom does not accept help that is offered in a timely manner, it is sad, but does not mean that you have not done enough. I am saying this as a person who is really hard on myself. For those who do not recognize that LCs are valuable professionals, change of attitude is hard. Just hang in there. Keep talking to them, and especially let them know you hear what they say. I expect that you will get referrals and consults from some people, and never will from others, although you can still talk to them. Becky Engel, RN, IBCLC
