I just had a call today from a mother of a five month old fully breastfed baby. Mom just joined a gym and wanted to have her "complimentary massage". When she told the masseur that she was nursing, he said that he could not do a massage for her as the toxins released by her body during the massage would spoil her milk. After I lifted my jaw off the ground, I told her that although there may be some cultural beliefs with regards to spoiling milk, I have never seen anything in the lactation literature that supports his contention. I also asked her, if she has toxins roaming around her body after a massage, where do they go? If into her bloodstream, does the masseur then give her a blood letting? Ok, that was sarcastic! But by then, we were both laughing. If a cleansing regimen releases toxins, why would anyone want one? And how would bile get into the milk? I am very interested to hear responses to this, just in case I get similar questions. BTW, if I give my son two bites of a green vegetable, he has forest green stools...
