I have not read the Iowa study. I presume you are referring to the one about formula samples not affecting mother's breastfeeding decisions or length of breastfeeding. But anybody who believes that is blind to what goes on in the world. Does anyone really believe that the formula companies would spend so much time and money trying to cut eachothers' throats so that *their* formula sample gets to the new mother, just for brand loyalty? Give me a break. We didn't believe the cigarette companies. Why believe the formula companies? Their own market research is so much better done than most medical studies! They would not do it if it didn't increase formula use. Furthermore, the samples and the literature are part of a grander strategy to keep our culture a "bottle feeding culture". Explain please why 12000 deliveries a year rules out being "Baby Friendly". It is attitude which rules it out. Jack Newman, MD, FRCPC
