I've tried to cull some info from the archives but I'd like to put it out here too. What would you suggest to "fatten up" a very healthy 8-week-old baby who has grown in length to the 75th %ile, but who is at the 5th %ile for weight? She is healthy, strong, bright-eyed, good muscle tone, urine and stool output is good. Other kids have had illnesses and neighbor kids are always around, but baby has been very healthy. But she doesn't gain. Mom has increased her own fat consumption and has pumped after feeding and given the milk but things aren't getting better in the weight gain. I've read of giving 1 T. of olive oil or other veg. oil, and I remember someone mentioning putting butter on nipples. (I couldn't find that post.) There is a history of serious allergies in the family, but as the baby is 8 weeks would butter still be a concern? What about ripe bananas or even cereals? I keep thinking about the allergies, though. Mom did try ripe banana one day and baby loved it. If mom uses some oil, is there one that would be preferred? Flax seed? Cold-pressed almond or canola? If you have any ideas, please send them quickly, as I will be seeing them this afternoon. If, however, you don't get to it today please post when you can. We are continuing to work on this. If you want to say, "NO! NO! DON'T GIVE OILS." Please send this short message. Patricia Gima, IBCLC Milwaukee mailto:[log in to unmask]
